I took the plunge and upgraded my Iphone firmware to V3.0 last night. I have not checked out the new features as of yet, keep tuned for more

Here's how to upgrade, jailbreak and unlock v3.0

Sync- make sure you sync your Iphone, as the 3.0 firmware will delete all the data and apps on your phone. After the upgrade you can re-sync the data and apps back to the Iphone.
Note: Apps added with Cydia or Installer will need to be reinstalled manually.

Download- You will need the following
Itunes 8.2
Iphone V3.0 Firmware (download through Itunes 8.2)
redsn0w (available at blog.iphone-dev.org)

Install- You will be prompted to install the V3.0 update, click on update and wait for the process to complete.

While you are waiting, install redsn0w (the 3.0 jailbreak) by Extracting redsn0w-win_0.7 to C:\

Jailbreak- Once your phone has been updated; it's time for the Jailbreak. Locate the 3.0 firmware update; the updates are stored in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates. Copy the file to c:\redsn0w-win_0.7\
Take the firmware file and drop it onto redsn0w.exe
Check the boxes to install CYDIA and ICY.
Wait for a message to come up saying please connect your iPhone into DFU mode. Then connect your iPhone to the computer if you haven’t already done so, and hold down
the Power and Home buttons for 10 sec. (If the apple screen comes up you have gone too far)
Then let go of the Power but keep holding onto the Home button. Hold it for at least 30 sec or until it reconnects to the computer.
Go to the Command Prompt window (from the start menu, select run and type cmd and and press enter.) When the command window comes up, press enter.

Unlock- now that you have updated your firmware and jailbroke your phone, it’s time for the Unlock.
Run Cydia or Icy
add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or icy
Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or ICY and install, then reboot the Iphone.

Final Steps- Now that the IPHONE is updated, jailbroken and unlocked, it’s time to resync the phone to Itunes. You may want to review the sync options in Itunes to insure your apps and data will be synced the way you'd like.
After Syncing your data and apps back to the Iphone, check the APP Store application for updates, as many apps have been updated to work with 3.0.
If you had any Cydia applications, you can reinstall them using Cydia or ICY.
Finally, enjoy!

Now that you are unlocked, you may want to tether your Iphone, also be sure to checkout my updated list of top apps for iphone 3.0

The release of Ultrasn0w, the software unlock for firmware v3.0, has been delayed. There is currently an issue with the unlock that disables the YouTube application. The Dev-Team are working on resolving the issues and hope to have it released soon.
redsn0w, which is currently out, provides a jailbreak for the new firmware and will include the Ultrasn0w unlock tool when it is released.
Before making any changes to your Iphone, I recommend reading the golden rules from the dev-team site.

  1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
  2. Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
  3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest version of redsn0w.
  6. This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
  7. redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
  8. redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).
To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)

Pinnacle Studio Version 12

Many of us born before the digital age, often have amassed a large collection of analog media. We may also have older digital technologies that we wish to upgrade to current media standards.

Some advantages of Digitizing your media, include:

  *Reduction of Clutter

  *Centralization your various media

*Ability to share with friends and family.

*The ability to easily make copies.

Ready to take the digital plunge?
First thing is first, organize your media. Decide what you’d like to digitize. Take inventory and see what you are able to do on your own and what makes sense to send out to a service.

Documents- I am terrible at paper management. In order to stay organized, I scan all my bills, documents, receipts and then discard them. For light scanning, a flat bed scanner will do. For higher quantity scans, I would recommend a Scanner with a sheet feeder. Very Large scan jobs can be farmed out to a professional.

Photos- Been tempted to place your high school photos on Facebook for the 30th reunion? How about digitizing your photos? Small collections can be scanned with a flatbed or sheet feeding scanner. If you have thousands of photos, you may want to utilize the services of scanmyphotos. for $50 they will scan 1000 of your photos and provide you with a DVD of all your photos.

Negatives and Slides- remember those? For the occasional negative scan, many flatbeds come with a slide adapter. To scan an entire collection, a slide scanner or scanning service may make more sense.

Video- we will discuss a few common video formats. Please be aware if your media is recorded in the PAL or NTSC format to insure you have the correct gear. For more information on the formats, see my article “Top Tech Tips for Olim”

VHS, VHS-C, Hi8 – These formats can easily be converted to DVD with the use of a DVD Recorder. Simply connect RCA, S-VIDEO, or other supported cable from the output of your VCR or CAMCORDER, to the input on your DVD recorder.

If you’d like to manipulate and edit your footage, there are video capture devices and software that allow you to download the footage to your computer where you can make edits and then render the file as a movie to play on your PC or on a DVD.

Digital 8, Mini-DV - These cameras are equipped with FireWire connections which allow you to download your footage to your PC or MAC, once it captured on your computer, the video can be edited and converted to a digital file for your hard drive or “Burned” to a DVD.

Records – Have an old record collection? Are/Were you a DJ with lots of vinyl?
There are specialized USB turntables that allow you to convert your records to MP3 format.
With additional hardware and software, you can mix and manipulate your music. Audacity is a free audio editing program and is a good start.

Cassettes and
REEL to Reel recordings With an RCA output from the cassette player connected to the input on your sound card, you can record the cassette to a digital file. With specialized software, you can enhance the sound quality of your recordings. If you don't have inputs on your sound card, you can pick up a USB adapter.

CD’S- With programs like Itunes or widows media player, it’s easy to copy your audio collection to hard disk, and access them with the computers on your network. You can also make compilation CD’s for the road.

DVDS- With low cost disk space available, it is possible to backup your personal DVD collection to hard disk, where you can view them all in a central location. To backup a DVD to Hard Disk, you will need DVD Ripping software to convert the DVD to a usable format.

Note: In all the above scenarios, we are assuming you are digitizing your own material. Before making copies of any copyright media, familiarize yourself with the laws. In some cases you may be  able to make a backup copy for your own use if you are the rightful owner of the media.

For those looking to digitize your family history, I recommend taking a look at
Digitizing your family history.

We’ve gone through various media digitization options. Once you have your collection digitized, be aware that digital files do not last forever. It is important to setup a backup and security strategy for your precious data. Please see my article on securing your data. I hope this article has been helpful. Share your media conversion tips or experiences on the blog.

A lot of people are impatiently waiting for the QuickPwn 3.0 download. Right now it is not up yet because the Dev Team is working hard on fixing bugs and bringing us a good jailbreak. Please wait patiently for the QuickPwn 3.0 jailbreak to be released. You can visit the QuickPwn Forums and also follow @QuickPwn on Twitter, or subscribe to QuickPwn YouTube channel for updates and download links.iPhone 3G users, remember: ultrasn0w will be released on Friday, so you won't be able to unlock iPhone 3G 3.0 until then.

Many US and International sites will not work here in Israel. This is especially true with banking sites and streaming media sites.
These restrictions can often be bypassed by sending your web traffic to a proxy server.
This "tricks" the webserver to "thinking" it is on a non-israel network.
I've been using AnchorFree Hotspot Shield to get to the sites I need. You can download the software for free at
http://www.brothersoft.com/anchorfree-hotspot-shield-download-71643.html
Once downloaded, install and then run as needed.

Enjoy!

With this list, I set out to inform you of the steps you can take to secure your systems and data. Once you look through, I think you'll be struck by how little effort is required to make your data more secure.

Backups
- Backing up your data to an external disc or other medium is a basic backup method that provides you a copy of your data. Using either a hard drive, CD, DVD, Tape or DLT along with backup software will allow you to retrieve data in the event of systems failure or accidental deletion. Be sure to store your backups in a cool, secure location to increase the lifespan of your backups.

Off site Backups- I recommend performing off site backups in addition to your on site backups. Off site backups allow you to backup your crucial data at an offside location. This provides additional protection in the event of damage to the location of your systems and backups.

For basic home or small office backups DropBox Offers free and low priced automated backups.
For Business backups, including database and application data, I recommend using onlinebackupvault. Use coupon code "OBVOOLF" for a 5% discount on their services.

Anti Virus - I recommend that All Microsoft Operating Systems (Windows) be protected with an Anti-Virus platform. Be sure to keep the anti-virus signature files up to date, and schedule regular full system scans.

Anti Spyware - In addition to Anti-Virus package, I recommend downloading Microsoft Defender, free on the Microsoft Website. Defender will schedule update and scans in its default setup. I usually complement it with occasional scans using Adaware or Spybot Search and Destroy

Network Firewalls
- Most consumer routers (wired and wireless) are equipped with a firewall. A firewall allows you to allow and disallow different types of data from entering or leaving your network. By default, most firewalls will allow no traffic into your network, while allowing all traffic out of your network. By limiting the types of traffic allowed out of your network, you are proving additional protection to your data and systems. If for example your machine was infected with a virus or spyware and an open connection out to the internet, the virus could travel freely out to other computers on the internet.
This could lead to your IP address being "Blacklisted" for services like outbound email.

System Firewalls - Many operating systems (MAC, Windows XP and VIsta) offer a software firewall included in the operating system. Enable these to provide additional security to your system.

Passwords- Be sure to set up passwords on your accounts and resources. Use a combination of uppercase, lowercase, numerals and special characters to strengthen the password.
Be sure to use a non-administrative account for daily computer use.

RAID- Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks are often used in business systems and protect against disk failure. By combining multiple disks in an Array with fault tolerance (For example Raid 1 or 5), you reduce the risk of losing your data with a single hard drive loss. As hard drives have gone down in price, RAID is now more accessible for personal and small business use. Whereas backups are generally a snapshot in time, RAID is a real time copy of your data.

Wireless Security- If you have any important data on your wireless network, be sure to implement wireless encryption on your router and computers. You can help prevent accidental use of your network by hiding the SSID and setting up MAC address restrictions.

UPDATE! - Be sure to keep your operating system, applications and Anti-Virus updated. New viruses and vulnerabilities are released daily. By keeping current, you reduce your risk of being exploited.

I hope you enjoyed these tips. Have a security tip to share? please comment on the blog.
